When was the last time you ate outside?

In 1975, the average American went on five picnics. This past year, the average American went on two picnics. That's a 60% decrease in outdoor, communal, cole-slaw-based dining.

Just something to think about as we move into summer.

The Real Colorado

I hate that term... we heard it too much during the election. There's the "real" America, or the "real" Virginia, or the "real" whatever. As if any part of this country is fake.

There is no "real" Colorado. There are no parts of this state that are more real than any other. That's what makes Colorado such a great place to live. The hippie driving the Prius that runs on GORP is sitting there at the Cherry Cricket right next to the rancher, next to the banker, next to just about anyone else you could think of.

So there are no "real" and no "fake" parts of this state. Instead, I offer a sampling of interesting links that provide snapshots, not definitive answers, about life around here.

Our Kitchen Manifesto

We don't pretend to be know anything about cooking, but we're experts on eating, so that should count for something.

One of us has the calibrated nose in the family; the other can usually recognize the smell of smoke, but only after the detector has gone off.

Our Great Danes have never met a protein-based food group that they didn't like.

When you have dogs like that to help out in the kitchen, the five second rule becomes the zero second rule.

One good knife can substitute for 90% of the gadgets at Williams-Sonoma.

Everyone should be required by law to try new things, at least once, but preferably twice.

A fresh loaf of bread goes with everything.

There are no calories in samples or tastings.

Keep it simple.

Be the change you wish to see in the kitchen.

Everything tastes better when it's shared.
